Championship Game Summary

On a sunny and unseasonably warm November 6th, the Grizzlies travelled to St. Albert Riel field for the Tier 2 Atom championship game with the West Edmonton Raiders. The Grizzlies were excited but focused during the bus trip and warm up but clearly came ready to play.

The Raiders kicked off to start the game and the Grizzlies moved the ball very effectively. The Grizzlies scored a touchdown early in the game to take a 6 to 0 lead.

The Millwoods defense was fired up on this day and they limited the Raiders to short gains and there were a number of two and outs. The Grizzlies offense moved the ball and the result was a 22 to 0 Millwoods lead at half time.

The second half saw the same kind of Grizzly effort but the Raiders did move the ball better and scored very late in the fourth quarter. With the convert the score was 22-8 for the Grizzlies. After the Raider kick off there were three kneel downs and the Grizzlies emerged as the CDMFA and Provincial Tier 2 Atom champions.

Well done Grizzlies. You focused, worked hard and saved your best football of the year for the most important games. It is remarkable what can be done when we all pull together.

Thanks for a Great effort and a Great season.

Final Score: Grizzlies 22, Raiders 8

Semi Finals Game Story

On a sunny but frosty Saturday morning, the Grizzlies made their way to SAP in Sherwood Park for the Tier 2 semi final game with the always tough Edmonton Mustangs.

The Mustangs kicked off to the Grizzlies who proceeded to march down the field and score a touchdown midway through the first quarter. The kicked convert was wide.

The Grizzlies defense managed to stop the Mustangs and the Millwoods’ offense was moving the ball but a fumble gave possession to the Mustangs. The Grizzlies D held again and Millwoods moved the ball effectively inside for another unconverted touchdown making the score 12 to 0 late in the first half. The Mustangs started to move the ball more effectively and on the last play of the first half scored a touchdown on a 15 yard passing play. The score at half time: Grizzlies 12, Mustangs 6.

The Millwoods’ defense stepped up in the second half limiting the Mustangs offense and getting a safety touch to make the score 14-6. The Grizzlies offense moved the ball using a combination of inside running and several long outside runs as well to score two more touchdowns, one of which was converted.

A Mustangs’ drive late in the fourth quarter was snuffed out by a Grizzly interception and two kneel downs ended the game.

It was an exciting, well played game. Congratulations to the Mustangs on a fine season and on a good effort in the semi final game.

The Grizzlies will now travel to Riel field in St. Albert on Saturday at 2:30 for the CDMFA Atom Tier 2 final against the West Edmonton Raiders.
