2013 Spring Camp

Although we all had our doubts a week ago, it is here!!!  Spring has finally arrived in Edmonton!!!  Which means it is time for the Mill Woods Minor Football Association to kick off our 18th season with our annual GRIZZLY SPRING CAMP for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 14.

Below is the outline for the weekends events:

SATURDAY, May 18

      10:30 to 11:30 p.m.   Registration and Check-in

      11:30 to 3:00 p.m.     Coaches’ Stations for all skill levels

       3:00 to 3:30 p.m.      All participants are provided a hot dog/veggie dog, chips and pop

      (additional items for players or family members may be purchased)

SUNDAY, May 19

      11:30 to 12:00 p.m.   Registration and Check-in

      12:00 to 3:00 p.m.     Coaches’ Stations for all skill levels

       3:00 to 3:30 p.m.      All participants are provided a hot dog/veggie dog, chips and pop

      (additional items for players or family members may be purchased)

Location

Players can come to a registration table at the entrance to the turf field to check-in and register at the start of each day of camp. For those of you new to Mill Woods Minor Football, the turf field is on 23 Avenue westbound (parking lot between ball diamonds and turf field). Our Millwoods Grizzlies Bear Den is a trailer located in Mill Woods Park just north of the baseball fields, 7008 – 23 Avenue. You can access it from 28 Avenue by the east side of Holy Trinity High School or from the turf field parking lot on 23 Avenue. Spring Camp activities will be on the turf field.

Registration and Check-in will include the following:

  • Pre-registered Players can check-in (receive a T-Shirt and water bottle)
  • Non-registered Players can register and pay for Spring Camp (cost is $40)
  • Registrations for the football season will be accepted along with any outstanding registration information / payments
  • Pre-registered for the football season?

     

     

    • Pick up your Registration Manual
    • Pick up your Swim Tickets (It has been decided that we will join with Leduc and hold our fundraiser at West Edmonton Mall Waterpark again this year. As a mandatory fundraiser, we expect that each player will purchase and pick up 8 tickets x $10 each for a total of $80. You may sell these to get your money back or use them for a Family / Friends Night.)

                                                 

Equipment

Football equipment is not required for Spring Camp. Players should wear appropriate attire for exercise according to the weather. Please wear cleats or running shoes. You will also need an adequate amount of water for the day and any snacks apart from what is provided at the end of the day. There is no access to a water fountain. Bottled water is available as a beverage choice with your hot dog at the end of the day. Some other seasonal items to consider for are hats, sunscreen, or bug spray.

Volunteers

There are a number of opportunities available to volunteer to complete the volunteer hours requirement of your football season registration. Volunteers are needed for registration, set-up, tear down, serving food, barbequing, to name a few. Bar-B-Que @ Sobey’s (34 street & 38 Avenue)

So I am sorry for the late notice.
This is a reminder and a request for players to take part in a fundraiser that is being put on for us by
The Meadows Sobey’s (34 street & 38 Avenue). July 3, 2010 from 11:00 am – 5:00 PM

We have been approached by Sobey’s with an amazing offer to host a Bar-b-que.

We have all the necessary volunteers in place, but we ask that any and all players who have some time to spare on Saturday to stop by Sobey’s between 11 & 5 PM with or without equipment if possible to help us promote minor football as well as Millwoods Football.

We have had all the products and supplies donated to us by Sobey’s & Johnsonville for the Bar-b-que, and Sobey’s is also willing to supply us with Car Wash supplies.  So we are asking any and all players to come out and help out where needed mostly with the car wash, and even talking to people and patrons about the sport of football, as well as just being present and throwing the ball around with some fellow team mates.

CISN country 103.9 will also be on site promoting our organization and the Bar-b-que throughout the day.  Sobey’s has put up numerous poster’s throughout their store promoting this event.  So we expect it to be very successful for our organization.

This is a great opportunity to bring attention and interest to minor football.  We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow; please drop by whenever you can and for as long as you can.

Football Alberta has passed a season of play regulations this past month. Below are the details of the regulations of play.  We wanted to inform all of our parents once this was decided at the Football Alberta Annual General Meeting on January 30th, 2010 in Calgary.

Once we have more information from the CDMFA on when the regular season will start we will work with our Coaches and parents for solutions to ensure all players have ample practice time prior to their first game.

Please Note: This proposal affects every team that plays minor football in the Province of Alberta. This information and information regarding the AGM will be posted on the website for everyone to view as well.

Dear Minor Representatives, League Presidents/Commissioners and Board Members:

The following are items addressed by the Minor Football Committee, voted on and passed at our recent Football Alberta AGM for inclusion in the Minor Provincials Policy and Procedure Manual. Please ensure that this information is distributed accordingly throughout your league so that all member clubs are aware of the following:

The Football -

Starting in the 2010 season the official football to be used for Provincial Playoffs will be the Wilson TDY Leather football for Bantam and Wilson TDJ Leather Football for Pee-Wee and Atom. Leagues and teams may continue to use whatever they wish during league play but for the purposes of Provincials the host team must have a good selection (minimum 3) of quality TDY or TDJ leather balls for usage by the officials. No ball switching will take place during Provincials as per the rule book.

Season of Play -

Season of Play for all Minor Football in the Province to be included in the Minor Provincials Policy and Procedure Manual read as follows:

  • Off-Season: This includes the months of December, January, and February in their entirety. Teams and association may do all the administrative activities they wish and are also free to host gatherings for their players in whatever venue they wish (i.e. gym nights). Players can attend off-season camps as individuals or whatever indoor team activity their club provides.
  • Spring Season: This includes the months of March, April, May, and June in their entirety. All teams may do any and all on and off-field activities they wish during this time. This will allow for ample time for the Midget season to take place and all other levels of minor football to run as much or as little spring programming as they wish.
  • Summer Break: This includes the entire month of July. Teams and associations may continue to do administrative activities during this time (i.e. registrations, equipment handouts), but no formal on or off field activities for the players will be allowed in equipment or not. Athletes may attend summer football camps (i.e. University of Calgary Summer Football Camp) or Alberta Summer Games/Football Alberta elite program events as individuals but no coach, team, league, or association that is a member of Football Alberta at the minor football level may be the sponsor or organizer of summer camps for the purposes of training their athletes as a team.
  • Fall Season: Teams and Associations will be allowed to start practices on August 1st of each year. Leagues and Associations will be allowed the flexibility to determine when they can start their regular season and/or pre-season tournaments but it would be recommended that 10 calendar days and at least 6 practises be allowed before any competition between teams takes place. The regular season for all leagues will conclude with their championship games played the first full weekend in November (i.e. both Saturday and Sunday are November dates). This will allow for 14 weeks of league play including playoffs.
  • Provincials: Provincial play for Pee-Wee and Bantam representative teams will commence the second full weekend in November and will conclude as per the schedule set by the Minor Football Committee and the previous years Planning Meeting. Atom football will continue finish up at the end of the regular season with the champions of the Capital District Tier I division declared Provincial Champion at that age category.

Consequences for not following the Seasons of Play Guidelines would fall into two categories:

TEAM - if a single team chooses not to follow the Seasons of Play Guidelines they would then forfeit any right to access Football Alberta programs and services. This would include everything from insurance to coaches clinic access to Alberta Summer Games and Bantam Bowls. Their League or Association would be free to choose whether or not they would be allowed to continue in regular season play or not but regardless of their record on the year, should they be allowed to continue, they would not be eligible for Provincials.

LEAGUE or ASSOCIATION - if an entire league or association chooses not to follow the Seasons of Play Guidelines they would suffer the same consequences as in the TEAM section above as a group and none of their representative teams would be eligible for Provincials.

NOTE: In either situation above the discovery of these incidents would have to be proven by evidence provided and would be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Extra Week for Pee-Wee Playoffs -

This years schedule will see an increase in the Pee-Wee playoffs by one week thus eliminating the need for mid week semi-finals. Following our standard protocol of having no BYE’s or teams sitting around for a week with no one to play the schedule is filled accordingly for the Pee-Wee semi-finals. Those second teams at Tier III and IV would rotate amongst the leagues each year. The last item is that since the Pee-Wee and Bantam Finals would now take place on the same weekend we would try for 2010 to concentrate the possible locations for the finals in the South for Bantam and the North for Pee-Wee. In 2011 we would switch and so on and so on. The concept being that we don’t want to put a strain on facilities and officials if that can be avoided.
