Game 3 Story
Game Story: Mill Woods Grizzlies
Saturday morning the Stony Plain Bombers visited Millwoods Park for a contest with the Grizzlies. The Bombers kicked off to the Grizzlies to start the game and the Grizzlies moved the ball before turning the ball over on downs. The Bombers picked up a couple of first downs before their offence stalled and they too turned the ball over on downs. The Grizzlies scored early in the second quarter and would not relinquish the lead.
It was a tough well played game but the Bombers had a short bench and were running on empty late in the game.
Congratulations to the Bombers on a tough, well played game that was closer than the final score would indicate.
Final Score: Grizzlies 36, Bombers 0
Game Story: Stony Plain Bombers
Game Story – September 4, 2010
Stony Plain Bombers vs. Mill Woods Grizzlies
Although the day was cool and windy, the sun did shine occasionally and although The Bombers lost the game, many of the players did shine as well.
Darian had some really good tackles in the first quarter, including one leaping ninja type hold that took one of the largest Grizzlies down. This tackle got the fans going early on. Sam F. had a great run early on in the quarter that helped The Bombers gain some yards. The team held their own during the first quarter with no points on the scoreboard.
The Grizzlies broke out during the second quarter, bringing in the player dubbed “Big Tony”, who was definitely big and a little intimidating. The Bombers showed no fear though and continued to work as a team to bring him down. Unfortunately the Grizzlies managed to score 3 touchdowns this quarter. Samuel D. had a great kick return in this quarter and Darian and Quade were strong for The Bombers offense. Score was 22-0 for The Grizzlies at end of first half.
Bombers continued to struggle in the third quarter, allowing another touchdown for The Grizzlies. Quade had a great run this quarter and Trystan really helped out with some nice tackles. Matthew and Riley also received a lot of cheers this quarter from the sidelines.
Grizzlies got one touchdown in the fourth, finishing the game at 36-0.
Although we lost this one, the boys played hard. Darian never gave up and was observed many times throughout the game helping out the rookies with plays and positions.
Game 2 Story
Game Story: Mill Woods Grizzlies
On a chilly Sunday morning the Grizzlies took to the field in Millwoods for a contest with the Seahawks. The Grizzlies kicked off to the Seahawks and held them to a two and out before getting the ball on offense and scoring quite quickly.
The Seahawks displayed an effective aerial attack and scored on a long pitch and pass, with a successful one point convert they took the lead. Millwoods had trouble holding on to the ball fumbling twice which helped the Seahawks score again to take a 14 to 6 lead.
In the second half the Grizzlies settled down and executed much better, taking the lead early in the third quarter and keeping it for the rest of the game.
Thanks to the Seahawks for a good and well played game.
Final Score: Grizzlies 38, Seahawks 14.
Game Story: Edmonton Seahawks
August 29 saw the Edmonton Seahawks hosted by the Millwoods Grizzlies.
The weather was brisk and it took several efforts to verify that it was August and not October. This was the second exhibition game for the Seahawks and they fought hard. The first half revealed a well-coached and solid Millwoods team that gave the Seahawks a run for the money. But the Seahawks hung in and recovered a couple of turnovers which sparked their offense. A balanced attack and tenacious
defense soon rewarded their efforts and the score at halftime was 14-12 for the Seahawks.
The second half revealed the depth and persistence of the mighty Millwoods Grizzlies, who continued to attack. Though the Seahawks fought back with several notable runs, passes, and tackles, the Grizzlies soon demonstrated their football prowess, finishing with an impressive victory.
Despite a lopsided score, there were many reasons for fans on both sides to cheer on their favorites. And if this game is any indication it should be an entertaining season for Atom’s fans.
Game 1 Story
Game Story: Mill Woods Grizzlies
It was overcast on Sunday as the Millwoods Grizzlies took to the brand new field turf at Johnny Bright Bowl to play the Camrose Buffalos but the rain stayed away and it was a great day for football.
The Buffalos started strong scoring on their first two possessions to take a 12-0 lead. The Grizzlies overcame some nervousness, settled down and started to execute much better in the second quarter. At half time, the Buffalos led 18-14.
The second half showed significant improvement for Millwoods scoring three touchdowns and keeping Camrose out of the end zone.
It was a good, hard hitting and entertaining Atom football game with both teams playing well.
Final score: Grizzlies 32-Buffalos 18.
Special Thanks to the Bantam Grizzlies who were there to cheer the Atoms off the field.
Bus for Game #1

Bar-B-Que @ Sobey’s (34 street & 38 Avenue)
We have been approached by Sobey’s with an amazing offer to host a Bar-b-que.
We have all the necessary volunteers in place, but we ask that any and all players who have some time to spare on Saturday to stop by Sobey’s between 11 & 5 PM with or without equipment if possible to help us promote minor football as well as Millwoods Football.
We have had all the products and supplies donated to us by Sobey’s & Johnsonville for the Bar-b-que, and Sobey’s is also willing to supply us with Car Wash supplies. So we are asking any and all players to come out and help out where needed mostly with the car wash, and even talking to people and patrons about the sport of football, as well as just being present and throwing the ball around with some fellow team mates.
CISN country 103.9 will also be on site promoting our organization and the Bar-b-que throughout the day. Sobey’s has put up numerous poster’s throughout their store promoting this event. So we expect it to be very successful for our organization.
This is a great opportunity to bring attention and interest to minor football. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow; please drop by whenever you can and for as long as you can.
I hope the weather works in our favour!!!!
To all atom players, welcome.
On behalf of the Millwoods Minor Football Association I would like to welcome all players, their parents and fans for another year of Grizzlies football.
We have started practice in preparation of the 2010 season. I believe we will have a very competitive team this year with a good mixture of wiley veterans and enthusiastic first year players. We could still use some additional players so if you have a friend or sibling who wants to play or you know of someone who is interested, bring them to practise and we can show them our stuff. The regular season is scheduled to begin around August 15 and the time between now and then will fly by, but we’ll have plenty more practises until the regular season starts.
I look forward to another Great season of Grizzlies Football.
Best Regards,
Grant L.
Head Coach, Atom Grizzlies
Football Alberta has passed a season of play regulations this past month. Below are the details of the regulations of play. We wanted to inform all of our parents once this was decided at the Football Alberta Annual General Meeting on January 30th, 2010 in Calgary.
Once we have more information from the CDMFA on when the regular season will start we will work with our Coaches and parents for solutions to ensure all players have ample practice time prior to their first game.
Please Note: This proposal affects every team that plays minor football in the Province of Alberta. This information and information regarding the AGM will be posted on the website for everyone to view as well.
Dear Minor Representatives, League Presidents/Commissioners and Board Members:
The following are items addressed by the Minor Football Committee, voted on and passed at our recent Football Alberta AGM for inclusion in the Minor Provincials Policy and Procedure Manual. Please ensure that this information is distributed accordingly throughout your league so that all member clubs are aware of the following:
The Football -
Starting in the 2010 season the official football to be used for Provincial Playoffs will be the Wilson TDY Leather football for Bantam and Wilson TDJ Leather Football for Pee-Wee and Atom. Leagues and teams may continue to use whatever they wish during league play but for the purposes of Provincials the host team must have a good selection (minimum 3) of quality TDY or TDJ leather balls for usage by the officials. No ball switching will take place during Provincials as per the rule book.
Season of Play -
Season of Play for all Minor Football in the Province to be included in the Minor Provincials Policy and Procedure Manual read as follows:
- Off-Season: This includes the months of December, January, and February in their entirety. Teams and association may do all the administrative activities they wish and are also free to host gatherings for their players in whatever venue they wish (i.e. gym nights). Players can attend off-season camps as individuals or whatever indoor team activity their club provides.
- Spring Season: This includes the months of March, April, May, and June in their entirety. All teams may do any and all on and off-field activities they wish during this time. This will allow for ample time for the Midget season to take place and all other levels of minor football to run as much or as little spring programming as they wish.
- Summer Break: This includes the entire month of July. Teams and associations may continue to do administrative activities during this time (i.e. registrations, equipment handouts), but no formal on or off field activities for the players will be allowed in equipment or not. Athletes may attend summer football camps (i.e. University of Calgary Summer Football Camp) or Alberta Summer Games/Football Alberta elite program events as individuals but no coach, team, league, or association that is a member of Football Alberta at the minor football level may be the sponsor or organizer of summer camps for the purposes of training their athletes as a team.
- Fall Season: Teams and Associations will be allowed to start practices on August 1st of each year. Leagues and Associations will be allowed the flexibility to determine when they can start their regular season and/or pre-season tournaments but it would be recommended that 10 calendar days and at least 6 practises be allowed before any competition between teams takes place. The regular season for all leagues will conclude with their championship games played the first full weekend in November (i.e. both Saturday and Sunday are November dates). This will allow for 14 weeks of league play including playoffs.
- Provincials: Provincial play for Pee-Wee and Bantam representative teams will commence the second full weekend in November and will conclude as per the schedule set by the Minor Football Committee and the previous years Planning Meeting. Atom football will continue finish up at the end of the regular season with the champions of the Capital District Tier I division declared Provincial Champion at that age category.
Consequences for not following the Seasons of Play Guidelines would fall into two categories:
TEAM - if a single team chooses not to follow the Seasons of Play Guidelines they would then forfeit any right to access Football Alberta programs and services. This would include everything from insurance to coaches clinic access to Alberta Summer Games and Bantam Bowls. Their League or Association would be free to choose whether or not they would be allowed to continue in regular season play or not but regardless of their record on the year, should they be allowed to continue, they would not be eligible for Provincials.
LEAGUE or ASSOCIATION - if an entire league or association chooses not to follow the Seasons of Play Guidelines they would suffer the same consequences as in the TEAM section above as a group and none of their representative teams would be eligible for Provincials.
NOTE: In either situation above the discovery of these incidents would have to be proven by evidence provided and would be dealt with on a case by case basis.
Extra Week for Pee-Wee Playoffs -
This years schedule will see an increase in the Pee-Wee playoffs by one week thus eliminating the need for mid week semi-finals. Following our standard protocol of having no BYE’s or teams sitting around for a week with no one to play the schedule is filled accordingly for the Pee-Wee semi-finals. Those second teams at Tier III and IV would rotate amongst the leagues each year. The last item is that since the Pee-Wee and Bantam Finals would now take place on the same weekend we would try for 2010 to concentrate the possible locations for the finals in the South for Bantam and the North for Pee-Wee. In 2011 we would switch and so on and so on. The concept being that we don’t want to put a strain on facilities and officials if that can be avoided.
Here is the proposed schedule for 2010:
